the strait of hormuz crisis asian nations including india brace for impact

"No ship shall be allowed to pass through Hormuz." This is the message currently being transmitted via high-frequency radio by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to vessels entering the Strait of Hormuz since Saturday. War is often fought with more than just physical weapons. Beyond military hardware, various strategies are employed to exert pressure on enemies. Sanctions and the blocking of airspace or maritime routes are integral parts of war tactics. In this vein, Iran has effectively closed a vital maritime gateway in the Gulf region. Although no official order has been issued by the Iranian government, reports indicate that IRGC vessels are issuing direct warnings to ships. Several shipping companies have already officially announced the suspension of their transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

Understanding the Strait of Hormuz:
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime passage situated between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Iran lies to the north of the strait, while the United Arab Emirates and Oman are positioned to the south. Spanning a width of only 33 kilometers, this narrow waterway serves as the primary route through which oil and gas flow from Gulf nations to other Asian countries, including India. Essentially, Hormuz acts as the gateway for cargo ships departing from Gulf countries to enter the Arabian Sea. It is this very gateway that Iran has now closed.

Cargo Movement and Global Trade Routes:
Approximately 20% to 30% of the world's oil trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz. It is the primary conduit for crude oil from Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Furthermore, nearly one-fifth of the global Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) trade moves through Hormuz, with Qatar being the largest exporter of LNG via this route. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), approximately 20 million barrels of oil, valued at nearly $500 million, passed through the strait daily in 2024. Asian nations such as India, China, Japan, and South Korea are the most heavily dependent on the oil transported through this route. Consequently, a closure of the Strait of Hormuz will inevitably lead to significant fluctuations in the economies of these countries.

The Impact on India:
India imports more than 80% of the oil it consumes from other countries, with the vast majority originating from Gulf nations. The disruption of oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz will lead to a surge in oil prices. This will create crises across all sectors reliant on petroleum, including transportation, ultimately resulting in price hikes in those areas. Additionally, this situation is expected to trigger inflation and a depreciation in the value of the Rupee.

The Consequences for Gulf Nations:
Just as importing nations face economic shifts, it is a fact that the exporting GCC nations will also encounter a massive economic crisis. The primary revenue source for nations including Saudi Arabia is effectively cut off by the closure of Hormuz. Therefore, it is certain that Gulf countries will make every possible effort to overcome this decision by Iran.
