It is often said that photography is the art of freezing time. A photographer perceives what remains invisible to others, captures it within a frame, and clicks. That captured moment eventually becomes a part of history. There are countless such historical milestones etched into frames by photographers over the years.
Do we not remember the image captured by Jeff Widener for the Associated Press in 1989 at China’s Tiananmen Square? The image of that unknown man standing undeterred before a line of Chinese tanks! Decades later, we still remember and share that photograph as a symbol of popular resistance. Similarly, do we not still recall the image of the young girl running naked and screaming in terror during the American invasion of Vietnam? As American interventions continue in various parts of the world years later, that image, known as the 'Napalm Girl,' endures as a remnant of time.
Consider the many photographs that have melted our hearts, brought tears to our eyes, and ignited our spirits amidst the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Even in the political history of Kerala, have there not been such significant photographs? We remember the image of E.K. Nayanar reading the party publication 'People’s Democracy' during a press conference while photographers ignored him to capture the image of another Communist leader sitting nearby. Or the image of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan sitting beside the mortal remains of V.S. Achuthanandan after his passing—specifically the close-up of Pinarayi’s eyes. We couldn't help but wonder what flickered through those eyes: memories of constant conflicts, the stubbornness of power, friendship, reconciliation, or resentment.

A Viral Echo from the Past
In a similar vein, another deeply emotional photograph is currently trending on social media. It is a photograph clicked in France many years ago—specifically, an image captured during a strike in Brittany, France, in 1972. Before discussing the photograph and the individuals within it, we must understand the backstory of the people featured in the frame.
Guy Burmieux and Jean-Yvon Antignac were childhood friends. They grew up playing together and shared everything with one another. They were the ones who kicked a ball around together in the evenings. However, time pulled them apart. Both went their separate ways, and years passed without them seeing each other.

Divergent Paths and a Fateful Encounter
Destiny handed Guy Burmieux the role of a factory worker. While living as a laborer in France, the injustices and exploitation at his workplace stifled him. Alongside his colleagues, Guy Burmieux took to the streets to strike.
The date was April 6, 1972. The workers' strike in Brittany had spread through the streets like fire. Guy Burmieux was there among the protesters, shouting slogans. The government deployed the police to suppress the strike, and a confrontation broke out between the police and the workers. During this clash, after many years, Guy Burmieux came face-to-face with his old friend, Jean-Yvon Antignac.

When Friendship Meets the Uniform
At a moment that should have sparked nostalgia, joy, and wonder, the emotions produced in both men were instead indifference, helplessness, and resentment. Burmieux encountered Antignac dressed in a police uniform. While fate had given Burmieux the clothes of a factory worker, it had given his childhood friend the uniform of a policeman.
Burmieux grabbed the collar of Antignac’s police uniform—the man who had come to suppress the workers' strike—and screamed, "Since you are in this, come on... come and hit me!" Antignac stood stunned, unable to offer a reply. Photographer Jacques Gourmelen captured this sight on his camera.
Today, that photograph continues to be discussed as a symbol of friendship, the influence that institutions like the State exert over personal bonds, and the sheer weight of helplessness and indifference.
