louise-gluck

The winner of Nobel Prize in literature 2020 Louise Gluck inspires thousands of readers all over the world. As a writer in English I was inspired and encouraged by her at the American literary site, we both are writing there.
Louise Gluck's poetry depicts the characters who are fighting for life and looking for its meaning, I feel this when I go through her poems. Introspective writing style, the deep insight of emotional understanding, myth, enduring mood of passionate love, emotional intensity, trauma, desire, sadness, Loneliness, torture and exploitation of women, family relationships, death, sensitivity, hypocrisy of the current society, divorce, frustration, optimism and powerful poetic voice : all these I experience in her poetry as mentioned on the international literary petals 'for her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal'. Her beautiful style of writing reworks ancient mythology and makes it very important for the modern readers.

Her poem 'A myth of devotion' draws an unforgettable picture of the love, the comparison the idea of love rather than the love for someone or something. In literature, death and darkness commonly represent solitude, rejection etc but Gluck illustrates death and darkness as a representation of love and freedom, here we see, the Greek God Hades shows love for a girl, Persephone, in an unorthodox way. Hades in the poem A Myth of Devotion uses the death to show his love to give Persephone freedom, he tells her: 'You are dead, nothing can hurt you ', to protect and show his love for her: 'He takes her in his arms. He wants to say I love you, nothing can hurt you but he thinks, this is a lie, so he says in the end, you are dead, nothing can hurt you' ...
Gluck is the author of 12 books of poetry including the recent collection Faithful and Virtuous Night and several books of essays on poetry. Gluck won many other literary awards too, including the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, National Humanities medal etc.
An interesting writing style, the realization and the truthful description of frustration which ends on optimism all these we touch deeply in a very small poem 'First Memory': 'Long ago, I was wounded. I lived to revenge myself against my father, not for what he was for what I was: from the beginning of time, in childhood, I thought that pain meant, I was not loved. It meant I loved'.

In the poem 'Early Darkness' Gluck expresses the great idea about the importance of knowing ourselves, about our past and our responsibilities and about the value of the motherhood : 'How can you understand me when you cannot understand yourselves ? your memory is not powerful enough...... '
The poem 'A Fantasy ' draws the picture of widows emotions and thoughts: 'The widow sits on the couch, very stately, so people line up to approach her, sometimes take her hand, sometimes embrace her. She finds something to say to everybody, thanks them, thanks them for coming. In her heart she wants them to go away. She wants to be back in the cemetery,...'

Hypocrisy dominates the society, that picture is beautifully woven in the poem 'The Untrustworthy Speaker' : 'I am invisible: that is why I am dangerous, people like me, who seem selfless, we are the cripples, the liars,'... The minds, words and actions are not the same way hypocrisy cripples down the behaviour of many people, their words seem pure but the minds plan for different, sometimes cheatings.
I can select any number of poems from Gluck to illustrate the brilliance of her writing. Constraints of space do not permit me to analyze the rest of the poems. I have felt that her poems take us beyond the parameters of modern social conditioning. I have wondered on her beautiful talents to connect her autobiography with classical myth.
Born in 1943, Louise Gluck is an American poet and essayist, she was born in New York City and grew up in Long Island. Her parents are Daniel Gluck and Beatrice Gluck. Her education was at Columbia University School of Arts during 1967- 68.
I recollect the quote from Louise Gluck, 'It seems to me in the past it has been a good thing, as a writer, to have experiences I hadn't expected '.
