The 2016 Summer Olympics, commonly known as Rio 2016, is an upcoming major international multi-sport event in the tradition of the Olympic Games due to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016.More than 10500 athletes from 207 nations, including first time entrant’s Kosovo and South Sudan, are scheduled to take part.

\Rio will become the first South American city to host the Summer Olympics.
MARACANA STADIUM
The Maracana Stadium will stage the opening and closing ceremonies and the decisive matches of the men’s and women’s football tournaments (both finals and one semi-final in each).
THE SPORTING EVENTS

The games will feature 28 Olympic sports- including rugby sevens and golf, which were added by the International Olympic Committee in 2009. These sporting events will take place at 33 venues in the host city and at 5 venues in the cities of Sao Paulo (Brazil’s largest city), Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Brasilia (Brazil’s capital), and Manaus.

WINTER SPORTS COMPETITIONS
The modern Olympic Games or Olympics are the leading international sporting event featuring summer and winter sports competitions in which thousands of athletes from around the world participate in a variety of competitions. Their creation was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, which were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894. The IOC is the governing body of the Olympic Movement, with the Olympic Charter defining its structure and authority.
INDIA AT THE 2016 OLYMPICS
India is scheduled to compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. Indian athletes have appeared in every edition of the Summer Olympics since 1920, although they had its official debut at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris.
The Indian Olympic Association is going to send the nation’s largest ever delegation (thus far 120 athletes; 37 larger than their previous record of 83 athletes in 2012) in Summer Olympic history.

India first participated at the Olympic Games in 1900. India first sent a team to the Summer Olympic Games in 1920, and has participated in every summer games since then. India has also competed at several Winter Olympic Games beginning in 1964. Indian athletes have won a total of 26 medals, all at Summer Games. For a period of time, Indian National Field Hockey Team was dominant in Olympic Competition, winning eleven medals in twelve Olympics between 1928 and 1980.
