Gau Rakshak Attack in Jammu and Kashmir: Driver Missing After Jumping into River to Escape
A young man has gone missing in the Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir following an attack by a group of cow vigilantes. The incident occurred on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, involving a driver identified as Tanveer Ahmed Chopan, a resident of Mundkhal village. It is suspected that he was swept away by the current after jumping into the river to escape the attackers.
Details of the Incident:
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon. Tanveer was transporting a cow and two calves from Jammu to his hometown in his vehicle. According to information provided by Banihal MLA Sajjad Shaheen, Tanveer possessed all the necessary official documents required for transporting the cattle. However, a group began tailing him in the Digdol area and intercepted his vehicle near Magarkoot. Eyewitnesses stated that while attempting to escape the assault, Tanveer jumped into the nearby Bishlari River.
Search Operations Intensified:
A massive search operation is underway to locate the missing Tanveer, involving the SDRF, police, civil administration, and local residents. Authorities have also sought assistance from the NDRF. Officials noted that the strong undercurrents and the depth of the river are posing significant challenges to the search efforts. As of now, Tanveer has not been found.
Four Arrested; Special Investigation Team Formed:
Based on eyewitness testimonies, the police have registered an FIR. Senior Superintendent of Police Arun Gupta confirmed that four individuals have been arrested so far in connection with the incident. A Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by the Banihal SDPO, has been formed to probe the matter. The police stated that further investigations into the case are currently ongoing.
