As South India’s largest Islamic scholarly organization, Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama is preparing to celebrate its 100th anniversary from February 4–8, 2026, at Kuniya Varakkal Mullakkoya Thangal Nagar, Kasaragod. The historic event will host cultural exhibitions, artistic performances, educational gatherings, and public interactions that reflect the movement’s century-long journey of service, spirituality and leadership.
Born in 1926, Samastha has remained the strongest representative of traditional Kerala Islam, upholding the Shāfi’i heritage and resisting ideological invasions that once threatened the community’s unity. Guided by the great scholar Varakkal Muthukkoya Thangal, Samastha began as a modest movement rooted in faith, but grew into a powerful institution that shapes the religious, cultural and social landscape of the region.

 

 

Preserving Tradition: The Birth of a Movement:

The early decades of the 20th century witnessed a religious upheaval in Kerala. Reformist waves and imported ideologies challenged the established traditions of the Muslim community. It was during this turning point that Samastha emerged as a guardian of Kerala’s Islamic legacy. Through the wisdom of senior scholars and the collective leadership of the Ulema, Samastha protected traditional rituals, cultural identity and scholarly authority—ensuring that the community remained rooted in its authentic heritage.
Today, a hundred years later, Samastha continues to represent moderation, scholarship and social responsibility, standing as the unquestioned voice of Sunni-Shāfi’i Muslims across South India.

 

 

The Mahall System: A Community-Owned Welfare Model:

One of Samastha’s most powerful contributions is its Mahall-based community structure. Reports indicate that Kerala has nearly 9,500 mahalls functioning under Samastha’s umbrella through the Sunni Mahall Federation.
Each Mahall acts as a collective welfare unit. It resolves local disputes, supports the poor, organizes community assistance, and ensures that no individual is left behind. The Mahall system manages: educational programs, healthcare assistance, cultural initiatives, marriage support, housing aid, funeral management. Although inspired by Islamic principles, this welfare model is open to everyone in the society. It has become a hallmark of Kerala’s communal harmony and stands as one of the most successful grassroots administrative systems in India.

 

 

The Madrasa Network: Shaping Generations Through Knowledge:

Samastha’s academic strength lies in its vast Madrasa network—over 10,000 madrasas across Kerala and the Gulf region. An estimated 8 to 14 lakh students receive structured Islamic education under the Samastha Kerala Islam Matha Vidhyabhyasa Board.
This system is globally recognized for its discipline, standardization and modern learning methods. Digital classrooms, updated syllabi and teacher-training programs have transformed Samastha’s madrasas into one of the most efficient Islamic educational networks in the world.
Beyond religious education, Samastha also runs: professional colleges, schools, training centers,
higher learning institutions. These institutions provide employment for thousands and offer quality education to lakhs of students, contributing immensely to Kerala’s educational excellence.

 

 

Suprabhatham: A Voice for the Voiceless:

In 2014, Samastha launched Suprabhatham, the Malayalam daily that grew to become the voice of marginalized communities and those who struggle to be heard. Within just 11 years, Suprabhatham expanded its reach to: 8 major print editions, including Kerala and Dubai, a popular web portal that discusses diverse contemporary topics, plans for E-paper editions across all GCC countries

The newspaper upholds ethical journalism rooted in the values Samastha has always stood for: justice, truth and responsibility. Today, Suprabhatham provides stable employment to hundreds of media professionals.

 

 

Standing Firm in Social and Political Challenges:

Samastha has consistently taken strong positions whenever the Muslim community faced social or political challenges. From the CAA protests to issues related to the Waqf Board, Samastha’s interventions were courageous and timely. Their leadership offered clarity, unity and direction when the community needed it the most.
Rather than political confrontation, Samastha has always chosen dialogue, negotiation and constitutional methods, making it an unavoidable voice in Kerala’s socio-political space.
